Ireland International Tug of War
International Tug of War Competition
Tug of war under the banner of TWIF includes both outdoor and indoor disciplines. Teams of eight pullers compete within strict team-weight categories so strength, technique, and teamwork — not just raw mass — define performance.
There are categories for men, women, seniors, U23 and juniors, reflecting the sport’s inclusivity and global reach.
The sport once featured in the Olympic Games (until 1920), and the governing federation continues to campaign for its reinstatement — so supporters and athletes alike look forward to a future where tug of war may again be on the Olympic programme.
Who Represents Ireland
International tug of war operates on two parallel tracks:
National squad teams — selected and trained by our high-performance committee for major championships.
Club teams — many of Ireland’s strongest clubs also enter TWIF club competitions, often bringing home medals in their own right.
This dual-track system means Ireland benefits both from a national pool of elite athletes and from strong club-level heritage, making for a large and competitive talent base.
Ireland's International Success
Ireland has a long and respected history on the international stage, with clubs and national squads earning recognition at World and European Championships across indoor, outdoor, senior, junior, mixed, and women’s divisions. Irish teams are known for their discipline, teamwork, and exceptional technical pulling — qualities that consistently place them among the strongest nations in the sport.
Ireland has also played an important role in the history of international tug of war, previously hosting TWIF world-level competition, including World Indoor and European Outdoor Championships. This tradition of excellence continues today through the work of both clubs and the High Performance Committee in developing athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
Developing Ireland’s Elite Athletes
The High Performance Committee (HPC) of Tug of War Ireland leads the national effort to prepare athletes for international competition. The HPC provides structure, oversight, and performance standards that guide athletes from club level through to representing Ireland on the world stage.
Its responsibilities include:
- national squad selection;
- organising squad training sessions;
- supporting club training and coach development;
- ensuring appropriate training venues and equipment;
- overseeing athlete conduct, welfare, and presentation;
- managing risk assessment procedures;
- coordinating with other TOWI subcommittees; and
- upholding good governance and high performance standards.
The goal of the High Performance pathway is clear: to provide every eligible athlete with a transparent, evidence-based route from club to international podium.
World and European Championships
Ireland competes under the rules of the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF), which organises a structured and regular calendar of major international events. These include:
- TWIF Outdoor World Championships – held every two years
- TWIF Indoor World Championships – held every two years, alternating with outdoor
- European Championships – covering senior, U23, and junior categories
- Club and National Championships – run in parallel at TWIF events
- Youth pathway events, including junior and development competitions
Weight classes and categories are periodically reviewed by TWIF; teams and clubs should always consult the most recent TWIF rulebook when preparing for competition.
